EBS Doctoral Programme in Management
A unique, highly individualised double-track PhD programme, which focuses on real-world impact. Doctoral candidates are offered a choice between a classical academic research track and an applied experimental track.
PhD in Management is divided into two main tracks:
- a classical academic research track, focusing on theories, analyses and critical thinking in areas related to contemporary management, business and entrepreneurship related subjects;
- an applied experimental research track, where research is directly combined with the development and implementation of real-life changes in organisations (private or public) or with the design and launch of new business or societal-impact ventures based on innovative product or service concepts.
Both main tracks include the possibility to uptake the desired Junior Research Fellow study route.
The EBS doctoral programme has two main doctoral student profiles:
Individual PhD student
PhD students concentrating on their doctoral studies and own research topic are called individual or independent doctoral students.
As an individual doctoral student, one have the opportunity to choose a research topic of interest within EBS’s research fields, provided a suitable supervisor is available.
An individual doctoral student may continue with their daily professional work, which is often not directly related to the doctoral thesis topic. However, individual doctoral students are still required to complete a pedagogical practice, which is a compulsory part of the curriculum.
Applications for an individual doctoral study position are carried out in accordance with the admission requirements and procedures.
Junior Research Fellow
A junior research fellow is simultaneously both a doctoral student and a contracted employee of EBS, and typically works within a certain knowledge team.
Junior research fellow positions are funded through state-funded places, EBS, external funding, or a combination of these sources. Appointment to a junior research fellow position requires successful admission to a doctoral study place according to the established requirements and procedures, followed by enrolment in the doctoral programme.
A junior research fellow receives a competitive monthly salary. In addition to undertaking studies and research in collaboration with their supervisor, the junior research fellow is also expected to contribute more broadly to EBS’s teaching and research activities.
The junior research fellow contract generally lasts up to four years, which corresponds to the nominal duration of doctoral studies.
The number of junior research fellow positions is limited, and they are offered to outstanding doctoral candidates whose academic focus and values align with the goals of EBS’s knowledge teams.
Visiting PhD students
Visiting doctoral students are PhD candidates from other universities, including international universities, who wish to complete part of their doctoral studies at EBS.
The study and research arrangements for a visiting doctoral student are agreed individually; supervision and course participation are arranged through an agreement between the doctoral student and the head of the relevant knowledge team.
