Outgoing Exchange Student

EBS students have the possibility to become exchange students and undertake studies in our partner universities all over the world – mainly in Europe, but also in Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Georgia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa and South Korea. Studying abroad provides you with a unique experience and enables you to test yourself in a new academic and cultural environment, practice your language skills, make new friends, find possible future business partners and gain a competitive advantage on the labour market.

To study abroad you may be a daytime, evening or distance student. Being an exchange student means you study for one or two semesters in our partner university. EBS students pay the tuition fee at their home university and receive rights in the receiving university similar to those in your home university.

The application deadline to study abroad on the academic year 2021/2022 is 1st of March 2021.

Please email kati.kirsipuu@ebs.ee for a consultation.

WHO CAN GO?

EBS students who are studying on the following programmes:
– International Business Administration (BA)
– Entrepreneurship in the Digital Era (BA)
– Ettevõtlus ja ärijuhtimine (BA)
– International Business Administration (MA)
– Two-year MBA
– Doctoral Studies

Attention: One-year MBA students can study abroad if they extend their studies to the two-year MBA programme.

WHERE TO GO?

As a student at EBS you can study abroad in Europe and other parts of the world.

Within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme Estonian university students may study in member countries of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom) as well as in other European countries which have joined the programme (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein,) and the candidate country – Turkey. For more information about the Erasmus+ programme please check the website of European Commission (https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/node_en).

With bilateral agreements, EBS students can study in countries outside European. These are Russia, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, Japan, South-Korea and China.

WHEN TO GO?

To study abroad, it is best to use the Mobility Window, which is the third semester for bachelor students and MA students. Studying abroad with Mobility Window means that students can choose the courses they like and all of the credits will be transferred. It is also possible to study abroad on a different semester, in this case students have to consult with their EBS Study Consultant.

Graduation during exchange semester is not possible. If you decide to study abroad in the last semester, please consider that your study period will be extended by a semester.

Students with Temporary Residence Permit (TRP)! TRP might not be extended after the expiry, please consider the risk when going on an exchange during the last semester. Please consult the Police and Boarder Guard Board.

WHAT ARE THE COSTS?

The receiving university is not allowed to require from the student a payment of tuition fee or additional fee for registration and exams or the use of laboratory and library, but the home university of the student will usually ask a tuition fee for a period spent abroad.

In addition to regular everyday expenses, the student must also consider costs related to insurance, residence permit and transportation. Because the standard of living, expenses related to transportation and consular requirements may vary a lot between different countries, individual cost accounting is necessary for separate countries.

Studying in the European Union and Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Turkey, students will get a scholarship within the programme of Erasmus+.

The Erasmus+ scholarship does not apply if you choose to study outside the EU. However, it is worth finding out whether the university or country of your choice invites students to apply for different scholarships.

What is Erasmus+ programme?

Erasmus+ programme is the world's most successful student exchange programme, which offers possibilities for studies and internships abroad.

The Erasmus+ Programme aims to boost skills and employability, as well as modernising education, training, and youth work. Erasmus+ provides opportunities for over 4 million Europeans to study, train, gain work experience and volunteer abroad. Erasmus+ supports transnational partnerships among education, training, and youth institutions and organisations to foster cooperation and bridge the worlds of Education and work in order to tackle the skills gaps we are facing in Europe.

OTHER OPTIONS

Free mover student

In case you decide to take up studies at a university which is not a partner of EBS or you have chosen a university where the number of vacancies for exchange students is full (i.e. the number of EBS students going to the university is larger than in the agreement between the universities), you may still go as a free mover. This means that you undertake your studies in the receiving university through the Open University and therefore have to pay this university’s tuition fee. The choice of lectures and system of grade transfer is the same but it is your own responsibility to find information on the tuition fee, etc.

How to apply?

1. Begin by choosing a university you wish to apply for. Please choose three different universities for your application (students please do not contact partner universities yourself, the communication between partner universities is only done by our Erasmus+ Coordinator).

2. When going abroad to study, you must consider the following requirements:

If you are a bachelor student:

  • make sure you have no tuition fee debts
  • your grade point average is not lower than 3.0
  • your English language skills are on the level of B2 (CEFR)
  • before going to study abroad, you will have to have studied at EBS for at least one year

If you are a master student:

  • make sure you have no study debts
  • your grade point average is not lower than 3.0
  • your English language skills are on the level of B2 (CEFR)
  • before going to study abroad, you will have to have studied at EBS for at least one semester

3. Fill in an exchange application here. Be ready to attach Letter of Motivation (one A4) in English and your English language test certificate (specified below). Letter of Motivation is for EBS not for receiving institution.  NB! If you have any  trouble with uploading a file to the application, please email kati.kirsipuu@ebs.ee. You will be notified about the decision within three weeks from the deadline 1st of March. The decision is based on the grade point averages and your letter of motivation. The higher your average grade, the more likely you are to get to the desired university. Since the number of vacancies for each university is limited, students´ other choices regarding universities are also considered.

If would wish to apply to one university for autumn semester and to another university for spring semester, please submit two separate applications.

With your application please also send in your English language test certificate:

  • TOEFL iBT minimum score of 87
  • IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing Service) minimum 5.5
  • Cambridge test - FCE or CAE
  • University language certificate stating the minimum level of B2

4. Familiarise yourself with the requirements of admission in the partner university. Initial information on the requirements is available on the homepage of the partner university.

If the student’s application is accepted, the student completes the forms of the respective university and chooses the subjects by filling in the Learning Agreement before leaving to go study abroad. The subjects must be confirmed by your EBS study consultant for the respective study programme and later also by the foreign university. Student must pass a minimum of 15 ECTS each exchange semester.

NB! Universities’ admission requirements vary greatly. In addition to the application, universities may also require a transcript of records, a note proving your language skills, study plan, health insurance, a financial guarantee bill etc. Along with admission documents, you will also receive information on other documentation which is required by the country (visa, residence permit, health insurance). Please keep to the deadline for handing in the documents – the deadlines may vary greatly depending on the educational system of the country. If you hand the documents in later, your application may be turned down.

NB! Exchange studies may extend your nominal study period. Please consult this with your study consultant.

Tuition Fee While Studying Abroad

Starting from 1st of January 2020 EBS offers a discount of 20% on tuition fee. The right to tuition fee discount applies after the learning agreement for exchange studies has been signed.

Students going to study abroad have the possibility to settle the tuition fee as a single payment or in two instalments. Students choosing the single payment receive the ERASMUS+ scholarship at once. If you choose to pay the fee in two instalments, you will receive the ERASMUS+ scholarship accordingly. The tuition fee for daytime students also applies to distance and evening students since students going to study abroad instantly become full-time students. Regardless of how many or few credit points (minimum 15 ECTS per semester) you decide to take in the foreign university, the tuition fee remains the same (except MA40 students whose tuition fee is credit-point-based).

The exchange student pays the tuition fee only in his or her home university. The receiving university cannot charge the student another tuition fee or any other additional fees for courses, registration, exams etc. They can, however, charge for study materials and student union membership.

In addition to regular everyday expenses, the student must also consider costs related to insurance, residence permit and transportation. Because the standard of living, expenses related to transportation and consular requirements may vary a lot between different countries, individual cost accounting is necessary for separate countries.

Length of Studies

Students can go abroad for 3* to 12 months (including a complementary traineeship period if planned). The same student may receive grants for studying or being trained abroad to tallying up to 12 months maximum per each cycle of study (bachelor, master, doctoral).

*for 2 to 12 months for traineeship abroad

Recognition of Studies

A home university has the obligation to recognise the studies, exams and other academic work of an exchange student in a foreign country as being equivalent to those in his/her home university.

Prior to going abroad, the student should compile his/her study plan and confirm it with the study consultant. A study contract which is based on the study plan is a signed agreement between the student, the home university and the receiving foreign university. Such an agreement provides the student with a sense of security that his or her studies abroad are in accordance with the requirements of his or her home university and guarantees that the student’s academic results are afterwards transferred.

Language Requirements

An exchange student should be able to participate actively in the studies of the foreign university. Different lectures in English are offered in most European universities, so it is mostly not necessary to know the local language to participate in studies. Erasmus+ will also implement online language tests, which are compulsory before and after period abroad.

Partner Universities

Students can study in universities recognised by these states. The home university of the student should have a partner contract with the university or company to which the student wishes to go to.

Scholarships

Exchange students can apply for a scholarship which is designed to cover additional costs related to the exchange. The ERASMUS+ scholarship does not cover all costs related to studying abroad, thus self-financing is necessary. As with students who study in Estonia, the exchange student is entitled to receive state scholarships, study subsidies and loans for the whole study period.

The student can apply for an additional subsidy from state and private funds for the period of his or her studies abroad. However, during the period abroad the ERASMUS+ student cannot use any other scholarships provided by the official structures of the European Union. In order to avoid double financing, the same requirement is applied to the state scholarship programme Kristjan Jaak and to scholarships paid out through agreements between the states.

The home university of the student allocates the scholarships. The amount of the exchange subsidies given by the Centre for Educational Programmes to the universities depends on the previous activity of the universities, the concurrence of their trends of international work with the priorities of the programmes.

One can use the status and the privileges of being an ERASMUS+ student even without a scholarship.

Additional funding

Needs-based study allowance

Estonian Government offers needs-based study allowance which is designed to support students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds while obtaining higher education.
A student who receives a needs-based study allowance from the Estonian government is entitled to receive a top-up support from the Erasmus+ program. The top-up support is 200 euros per month.

Amounts of the Estonian Government needs-based study allowance are divided as follows: EUR 75, 135 and 220. Being qualified to any of the amounts of the allowance depends on the average income of the student and their family members in the calendar year prior to the academic year of submitting an application for the study allowance. The family’s average income is calculated on the basis of the taxable income in the calendar year preceding the academic year of applying for the allowance. For example, in the 2019/2020 academic year, data for 2018 are taken as a basis.

Monthly income per family member Allowance per month
up to 117 €  220€
117,01 – 234 € 135€
234,01 – 468 € 75€
more than 468 €  not eligible

A student is considered to belong to the same family as their parents until the age of 24 unless the student is married, a parent or a guardian. In that case, the student is considered to be a separate family.
Needs-based study allowances are granted twice per academic year: for the autumn and spring semesters. More information about the support can be found HERE.

Erasmus+ special needs support

Additional funding is available for participants with physical, mental or health-related conditions via the Erasmus+ special needs support. The Erasmus+ mobility-related areas, for which additional support can be applied on the basis of individual needs, include (but are not limited to) the following: customized accommodation, travel assistance, medical assistance, support equipment, adaptation of study material, support person, etc. This additional support grant is a contribution based on real costs.
In order to apply for the special needs support, please contact the International Relations Office Project Manager who assists in completing the application form for Erasmus+ special needs support.

Erasmus+ Credit Mobility

International Credit Mobility is an Erasmus+ sub-programme supporting mobility of academic and non-academic staff and students between higher education institutions from programme and partner countries (non-EU countries).

Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility gives students the ability to participate in exchange programs at partner universities outside of the European Union. Exchange is possible with universities with whom Estonian Business School has signed an Erasmus+ agreement depending on the extent of funding that will be granted for projects.

Erasmus+ scholarship includes travel support (depends on the distance) and monthly scholarship 650-700 euros. Exchange studies in partner university are free of charge.

Duration of mobility:

  • 3 to 12 months for studies
  • 2 to 12 months for a traineeship
