A New Beginning at EBS High School: Welcome, New Challenges and Opportunities!

a
On the 2nd of September 2024, a new academic year commenced at EBS High School. During the formal opening ceremony, Headmaster Kersti Uudla warmly welcomed students and teachers with an inspiring speech, encouraging everyone to set new goals and take full advantage of the opportunities this school year presents.

The Headmaster expressed hope that students had a great summer and emphasized the need to now focus on learning rather than simply working. This year, EBS High School welcomed 53 new 10th-grade students and three new classmates joining the 11th grade. She stressed that all students have the potential to succeed, but it is up to each of them to decide whether they will become masters or remain apprentices, taking personal responsibility for their growth.

Addressing the school community, the core values of EBS High School were briefly highlighted—freedom and responsibility, creativity and entrepreneurship, and care. These values guide both teachers and students at EBS High School. History has shown that these very principles have helped EBS High School and its students rise to the top among Estonian schools, achieving outstanding results not only in national exams but also in careers and life in general. Kersti Uudla remarked, "Learning is trendy, and enjoying it while following our school's core values will undoubtedly lead to better results."

EBS High School is distinguished by its excellent teachers and academic atmosphere. Here, high school students, undergraduates, master's students, and doctoral candidates all learn under the same roof. New students might be surprised to learn that EBS does not use a school bell—classes begin and end at the teacher's signal. The primary role of a teacher is to be a companion and guide in learning rather than a traditional instructor.

The Headmaster also asked students to raise their hands to show who is ready and willing to learn. It was heartening to see a sea of hands rise in the auditorium—some high in the air, some more modestly raised, and some barely above their laps. Each student has thus pledged to be their best self!

In closing, the Headmaster wished all students a happy and successful school year, urging them to appreciate their teachers, care for themselves and others, and boldly embrace challenges. Kersti Uudla concluded, "What separates a mediocre performer from a successful one is that the successful person is usually not a complainer, but a solution-provider, an idea generator, an entrepreneurial doer. So, let’s make this the best school year of our lives! Let’s agree that this year we operate outside our comfort zones and stay awake in class :)!"
